Sycamore

Welcome to Sycamore!

I hope you enjoy having a look through the photos of Sycamore's work.

Last term, the children focused on reading ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘Macbeth’ as their Literacy class texts. They really enjoyed the themes, challenges and learning that each book provided. This half term the children will be focusing on ‘Room 13’ by Robert Swindells.  It tells the legend of Dracula coming to life on a school trip to Whitby Abbey – watch this space for some work linking to this text.

The children are learning to use a range of higher level vocabulary, found in reading books, class texts and word banks and are increasing their use of them in their work.

Key tip: Be a reading detective by having a dictionary at your side when you are reading a book so that any unfamiliar words can be checked, learnt and applied. Reading every night will help you to develop this vital skill.  I would love to see new words you have learnt, so jot them in your reading record.

In maths, the children are further developing key mental maths skills to be able to solve a range of problems.  It is vital they can accurately and fluently recall number bonds, times tables and corresponding division facts, so need to keep practising these at home.

Last term we studied ‘Ancient Greece’, ‘Properties of Materials’, ‘Fairtrade’ and ‘Electricity’.  The children enjoyed a Greek day when they tried a variety of foods (including the not so popular olives).  Among other things, they learnt how to wire a circuit, why it is important for the economies of poorer countries that Fairtrade is successful and we learnt many more things about all of these topics.  Please have a look at the wonderful project work linked to our Greek topic.

This term the children are learning about ‘The Mayan Civilisation’ and looking at how the human body works – watch this space for some fabulous work!
