Supporting Learning at Home:
Times tables practice is extremely important for children throughout primary school. Your child has been given log in details for Times Tables Rockstars. Please encourage your children to log in at least once a week to develop their speed and practise their tables. Another great online game to practise times tables is ‘Hit the Button’.
All children have two school reading books; one fiction and one non-fiction.
Please encourage your child to read for 10-15 minutes every day. Even though a lot of this reading may be done independently, it is important that your child has opportunities to share a book with an adult. This supports your child to improve their reading speed, accuracy, vocabulary and understanding of the text. See the Learning Links for useful questions you can ask your child during reading.
After reading, this needs to be recorded in your child’s home school book, which will be checked weekly by a member of staff. When your child has finished reading their fiction book, they will then complete a quiz about their book on Accelerated Reader. This will check how well your child has understood the text, and helps us to ensure that children are always reading at their correct book level.
Spellings are practised on a daily basis in school. Your child will bring home a weekly list of spellings to learn and practise based upon the spelling rules being focused on during the week. Spelling tests will take place on differing days due to the timetable, so please check the spelling list for the test date. We would be grateful if you could help your child to practise their spellings. This can be done in a variety of ways, from repeatedly writing to spelling aloud. Why not get creative and use paints or chalks to make the practise fun! Ask your child the spelling rule(s) for the week to further support them in learning the patterns and rules.
Our PE sessions take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Your child will need to wear black shorts or jogging bottoms, a plain white or their House t-shirt, as well as trainers for outdoors and plimsolls for indoors. Please note that your child will only be allowed to wear shorts (not jogging bottoms or leggings) when the PE focus is gymnastics for safety reasons.
