Elm

Welcome to Elm!

I hope you enjoy having a look through the photos of Elm's work.  We have had some fantastic work created recently on our current topics and we love sharing these with you.

English:

Last term, the children read ‘Room 13’ by Robert Swindells.  It tells the legend of Dracula coming to life on a school trip to Whitby Abbey.  We enjoyed reading this book and as a result wrote some fabulous pieces of writing, which included a setting description, tension building techniques and an explanation of how to capture Dracula!  We designed our own machines to do this, so if you ever need to capture the legend that is Dracula, Year 5/6 will guide you along the way!

This half term our focus text is ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ by J.K.Rowling.  We have already begun reading this and are thoroughly enjoying it.   We will be using it to create a range of writing pieces, to our comprehension skills and most importantly to enjoy the freedom that reading offers – maybe we’ll even learn some magic along the way!

We are continuing to learn how to use a range of higher level vocabulary in our writing.  We have already discovered some new vocabulary within the Harry Potter text and our aim is now to try and independently use this in our work.

Key tip: Be a reading detective by having a dictionary at your side when you are reading a book so that any unfamiliar words can be checked, learnt and applied. Reading every night will help you to develop this vital skill. I would love to see new words you have learnt, so jot them in your reading record.

As we move towards SATs, it is important that the children are using their revision guides and SATs practice questions/papers provided to them.  This will help them to revise key grammar, spelling, punctuation and reading elements.  Please see the further information given to children advising what they are required to know, as an extra guide.

Maths:

In maths, the children continue to develop key mental maths skills to solve a range of problems. It is vital they can accurately and fluently recall number bonds, times tables and corresponding division facts.  Under the ‘useful links’ section, we have updated some links that give access to further SATs related questions that the children may wish to use.

Exciting news!  Children have now been given a login to TTRockstars, a fantastic times table programme.  https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth/school/student.
