Helping at home and homework

Maths

The main task for children to do at home is times tables practice.  Year 5 children need to know all times tables and the related division facts.  'Hit The Button' is a great online game to practise all times tables.  Your child has been given a log in and password to Times Tables Rockstars.  Please encourage and remind them to log in and practise their high speed tables at home in preparation for their weekly times tables test.

Reading

All children have two school reading books - one fiction and one non-fiction. Please encourage your child to read for 15 minutes at least three times a week, but ideally every night, either to themselves or whenever possible to an adult, as this really helps improve their reading speed, accuracy, understanding of the text and vocabulary.  Discussing the book with your child is also very important.

Please let us know when a book has been completed, so that your child can complete a quiz about the book on Accelerated Reader and then move up the reading ladder that's in the classroom laugh

We have access to an online library through a site called myON. Here the children can choose from hundreds of online books from all genres imaginable... If you have limited access to books at home, or would like to access a different genre from the book your child has bought home, logon and discover the reading wealth at your fingertips! As myON is lined to Accelerated Reader, the children are able to take quizzes that contribute to their word count once they've finished.

This half term the children will be reading 'Kensuke's Kingdom' by Michael Morpurgo in their class read time. This is a time where I will read to the children. Kensuke's Kingdom is a fantastic book all about friendships being formed in the most unexpected places.

Spelling

Children practise spellings as part of their Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling lessons. Every Wednesday, the children will bring home spellings based on the sounds and spelling patterns they have been learning. Spelling tests will take place on the following Wednesday. We would be grateful if you could help your child to practise them and by putting them into sentences so that they can understand how to use the word in context.  A great question to ask your child is “What is the spelling rule for these words?”

PE

Mondays and Thursdays are our PE sessions. Children should come to school in their PE kit, so sensible trainers, black shorts or jogging bottoms and a plain white or House T-shirt. As PE is mainly outside, please provide your child with a jumper. Please ensure your child is in appropriate footwear. The wearing of earrings is not permitted for PE and they must be removed. If this is not possible, please send your child with some micropore tape so that they can tape their ears up themselves.

Celebrating Achievements

Each week on a Friday morning one child will be chosen for a 'Star of the Week' award, one child for a '3C' award, and one child for a 'Pride in Presentation' award. If your child has been chosen you will be notified.
Don't forget to check the newsletter where you will see the chosen children!
