Poplar

Welcome to Poplar Class!

Communication & Interaction Resource Base

Welcome to Poplar! We are a class based in the Communication and Interaction Resource Base. The pupils in Poplar range from Year 3 to Year 6. We maintain a high staff-to-pupil ratio to provide tailored, individualised support. This includes teaching assistants who help some pupils access selected lessons in the main school.

We follow a structured timetable that covers all areas of the curriculum, alongside allocated time for interventions such as sensory skills, Toe-by-Toe (a reading intervention), Dough Disco, motor skills sessions (to develop coordination), Game Time (to enhance social skills), and support from our ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant). While we understand that the school day can be challenging for some pupils, daily reading and spelling practice is incredibly worthwhile if possible. Detailed ways to support learning at home are provided below.

We check the home-school diaries every morning, so please feel free to use them to communicate with us as needed. We will record daily reading in the diary along with any other messages for parents. Letters to take home will also be placed inside these diaries, so we kindly ask that you check them daily. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to get in touch – we are always happy to help.

Best wishes,

Mrs Jones and Mrs Zielinska

Supporting Learning at Home:

Maths

One of the tasks for children to complete at home is practicing their number bonds and/or times tables. Your child has been given a login and password for Times Tables Rockstars and Numbots. 'Hit The Button' is also a great online game for practicing all times tables. Please encourage and remind them to log in and practice regularly.

Reading

All children have a fiction book to bring home. Please encourage your child to read for 10 minutes every night either to themselves or whenever possible to an adult, as this really helps improve their reading speed, accuracy, understanding of the text and vocabulary.  Discussing the book with your child is also very important. In Poplar class, we have a Read-a-Thon board where the children place a sticky note each time they complete a book and a quiz. At the end of each term, the sticky notes are counted, and the child with the highest number of books read gets to choose a treat for the whole class.

When you have read with your child, please comment and sign in their reading record. When they have completed their book, they can do a quiz on Accelerated Reader to demonstrate their understanding of what has been read.

We also have access to an online library through a site called myON. Here the children can choose from hundreds of online books from all genres.  As myON is linked to Accelerated Reader, the children are able to take quizzes that contribute to their word count once they've finished.

Accelerated Reader login and myON login details can be found at the back of your child's reading record/  home-school diary.

Spelling

Children practice spellings as part of their Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling learning. The children will bring home spellings every Friday based on the sounds and spelling patterns they have been learning. Spelling tests will take place on Fridays, so please check the spelling list given for the test date. We would be grateful if you could help your child to practice them.

PE

Wednesday is our PE sessions. Children should come ready in black shorts or jogging bottoms, jumper and a House T-shirt. Please ensure your child is in appropriate footwear. The wearing of earrings or jewelry is not permitted for PE and they must be removed.
