Welcome to Elm! Y6
Helping at home and homework
Maths
The main task for children to do at home is times tables practice. Year 6 children need to continue to know all times tables and the related division facts to assist with efficiency in calculations. 'Hit The Button' is a great online game to practice all times tables. Your child has also been given a log in and password to Times Tables Rockstars. Please encourage and remind them to log in and regularly practice!

Reading
All children have a fiction book to bring home. Please encourage your child to read for 15 minutes every night either to themselves or whenever possible to an adult, as this really helps improve their reading speed, accuracy, understanding of the text and vocabulary. Discussing the book with your child is also very important. In Elm class we have reading rewards linked to the bookmark that your child will bring home - please ask them how they get the rewards!
When you have read with your child, please comment and sign in their reading record. When they have completed their book, they can do a quiz on Accelerated Reader to demonstrate their understanding of what has been read and move up the reader ladder that is displayed in the classroom - I wonder who will reach 1 million words first?
We have access to an online library through a site called myON. Here the children can choose from hundreds of online books from all genres imaginable... If you have limited access to books at home, or would like to access a different genre from the book your child has bought home, logon and discover the reading wealth at your fingertips! As myON is lined to Accelerated Reader, the children are able to take quizzes that contribute to their word count once they've finished.
This half term the children will be reading 'Kensuke's Kingdom' by Michael Morpurgo in their class read time. This is a time where the class teacher reads to the children. Kensuke's Kingdom is a fantastic book all about friendships being formed in the most unexpected places.

Spelling
Children practice spellings as part of their Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling learning. The children will bring home spellings every Friday based on the sounds and spelling patterns they have been learning. Spelling tests will take place on Friday's, so please check the spelling list given for the test date. We would be grateful if you could help your child to practice them - a great question to ask your child is “What is the spelling rule for these words?”
PE
Thursdays and Fridays are our PE sessions. Children should come ready in black shorts or jogging bottoms and a plain white or House T-shirt. As PE is mainly outside, please provide your child with a jumper. Please ensure your child is in appropriate footwear. The wearing of earrings or jewelry is not permitted for PE and they must be removed.
Celebrating Achievements
Each week on a Friday morning one child will be chosen for a 'Star of the Week' award, one child for a '3C' award, and one child for a 'Pride in Presentation' award. If your child has been chosen you will be notified.
Don't forget to check the newsletter where you will see the chosen children!
